Throughout the whole semester, we've been learning about evolution, natural selection and how we've come to be as diverse as we are today. In order to learn about this huge topic we had to break it down in smaller segments, in this case DNA replication and genome. Our genome is basically complete set of genes, containing a never ending list of pair of letters (A’s with T’s and C’s with G’s). For this project we were assigned a person, and given that person’s genome we had to 1) find mutations in its genome and 2) find it’s ancestry (that is, where they come from). As impossible as this may sound considering that our genome is ridiculously long, we wrote a code which compared our person’s genome to a “model” one that contained the genome of millions of people and identified those mutations.
Since I was my group's Project Manager, I had no specific job but to make sure everyone stayed on task and make myself useful if someone needed help. i also contributed with the organization and setup for Exhibition Night.
One challenge that I faced was that I didn't feel like I was doing enough, still there was a never ending list of things to do. There was just so many things to get done and problems to be solved. Everything seemed overwhelming at first, but once we got organized everything seemed to work perfectly.
One thing that I learned and know that will always be useful throughout my life is to know that there is always something to do.
