Art Rocks The Boat: Women's Museum 2015 Summer Exhibit
As I mentioned in previous blog posts, for my internship project I am now part of the Art Rocks The Boat Exhibit team. The museum had a previous exhibit called Rockin' the Boat which consisted of the second wave of feminism during the 60's and 70's. This summer exhibit will be focused on the arts: literature, music, visual arts, dance, fashion, etc. I personally focused on music. This honestly couldn't have been more perfect for me. I have a great interest for the second have of the last century and I learned so much throughout this researching process. Even though my project was pretty research heavy, I did have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas with the curator and discuss their potential to be part of the exhibit.
I started off without a specific structure. I just based my research of women with an impact on music during the second wave of feminism on one website. Out of that website I started branching out to other sources like YouTube, music archives and even an album collection that the Museum has. Later on, my teacher Dr. P lended me a book called 1968. A couple of weeks before, I had attended to an exhibit in Orange County called Alien She, which was based on the Riot Grrrl movement in the 90's. In the exhibit there were IPods with different playlist from various bands. I've always found playlist so interesting, especially making them. I feel like it's like writing a short story. I talked to the curator because I thought it would be a great idea to have a playlist with songs written and/or performed by female artists who expressed their feminist voice through their songs. I put together a playlist and it will be part of the exhibit.
I found an archive online with names of bands from the second wave. I fell in love with the website primarily because it was very visual. It consisted of a compilation of pictures like ads, posters, tickets and pictures from these bands. I saw great potential in this website and, even though it was focused on the 80's, it still possessed the same idea as the whole exhibit. I talked to my mentor and the curator about it and hopefully it can somehow be part of the final product.
My internship project was more like a contribution to a small part of a bigger project. Still I am proud of what I worked on and I would love to keep working on it, maybe even help setting it up during the summer.
